Bizarroland is a film festival hosted in Tampa, Florida, that welcomes unpolished and unprofitable films that are driven by the pure human urge to make something real. It values artists and films that express raw, personal, and often unconventional ideas. It’s an escape from commodified art and welcomes “beautiful weirdos” with open arms.
The Design Process
I started my design by researching the event and figuring out the main elements of the festival. This particular festival puts an emphasis on weird and unconventional work. I wanted to reflect the themes they showcase, and went for a roughly visceral illustration that’s a little unclear at first glance. I also wanted it to call back to the awards that they give out at the festival, which are tentacle shaped trophies called, “sickies”, having it emerge out of the ambiguous figure. Illuminating the figure is a UFO, which calls back to the other-wordly and unusual films that are submitted. This project was made in the style of a “Polish Poster” which is characterized by surrealism, painterly brushstrokes, and bold typography.
